Anxiety is a frequent companion for many of us in the western world. One of the definitions of anxiety is “a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome.” I have often considered anxiety to be a negative emotion projected into our future. Another word for anxiety is fear.
As we can have no way of knowing what our future may be, it can be very hard to allay our fears and concerns. Sometimes we can reassure ourselves by thinking about a potential situation which is causing us anxiety and making any and all preparations we can. However, frequently there is still anxiety underpinning this situation.
We can also experience “free-floating anxiety” which is a general feeling of unease and concern without a particular situation or experience to attach it to. This can be very hard to dissipate by thinking alone.
One of the best ways to disperse anxiety is to become totally present. To bring our awareness and consciousness into our present moment, the now. We can do this in different ways. My favourite three are:
1. With meditation: becoming totally aware of and immersed within the breath. Noticing the breath moving in and out of the body.
2. With physical body mindfulness: becoming totally aware and immersed within the sensations within your physical body. Becoming aware of your 5 senses – touch, taste, smell, sight, hearing; by feeling your feet on the ground, your sitting bones on your seat etc
3. Communing with nature: immersing yourself in a beautiful location and bringing your awareness and consciousness to the aliveness of all the nature around yourself, especially using all 5 senses to heighten this awareness.
These three techniques are ones I have used frequently. However, sometimes they aren’t enough. Sometimes you have to face your anxiety head on. You have to immerse yourself within the anxiety, to deeply feel it. This can feel very challenging as some anxiety is incredibly profound and feels scary and overwhelming. However, I urge you to do so.
I have recorded a meditation which you can access here. By immersing yourself within the depths of your anxiety, you can release your energy which is deep within and being restricted by your fears, and you can turn this energy into your power, your passion and your strength. You can channel this immense energy into what you do want in your life – maybe inner peace, calm, motivation, physical energy etc. Convert this restricted energy into a readily accessible form for your own good.
